The adoption of artificial turf in Vancouver has accelerated dramatically over the past decade, driven by a combination of Vancouver's increasingly difficult lawn maintenance conditions, Metro Vancouver's lawn watering restrictions during summer drought periods, and significant improvements in the quality and realism of modern synthetic grass products.

Contemporary artificial turf is genuinely difficult to distinguish from well-maintained real grass at normal viewing distances. The latest products use multiple fibre types — a mix of straight and curled fibres — at varying lengths to create the textured, multi-tone look of natural grass rather than the flat green carpets of earlier generations. UV stabilisers prevent fading. Lead-free materials have been the industry standard for over a decade. Products certified by organisations like FIFA for sports fields are available for residential installations that need maximum durability.

In Vancouver's climate, artificial turf installation has a specific drainage challenge that doesn't exist in drier regions. Our rain volume — over 1,150mm annually — means turf drainage systems need to be substantially oversized versus what's required in Calgary or the Interior. We install a minimum 4-inch crushed rock drainage layer (8 inches is better for very wet sites), a weed barrier fabric, and in many cases a modular drainage mat beneath the turf layer to accelerate vertical drainage. A turf system that drains slowly turns into a soggy, compacted mess in a Vancouver winter.

Sub-base compaction is critical for artificial turf. A soft or uneven sub-base results in turf that looks wavy and develops flat spots where foot traffic compresses the infill. We compact the crushed rock base to a minimum 95% Proctor density, check grade carefully with a laser level (a 1.5–2% cross-slope built into the sub-base handles sheet drainage), and install concrete or aluminium bender board at all borders to hold the turf edges cleanly.

Artificial turf is particularly popular for dog runs and pet areas in Vancouver yards — the surface is easy to hose down, dries quickly, and doesn't develop muddy patches from dogs pacing their favourite routes. We specify higher-pile, higher-density turf for pet areas, and infill with zeolite or antimicrobial coated crumb rubber rather than standard silica sand, which provides better drainage and odour control.
